Local Plant Sales

The lockdown was a challenging time for everyone, and local businesses like W. Davies Ironmongers stepped up to support their community. When the Botanical Gardens Plant Shop had to close due to the restrictions, the ironmongers became a go-to destination for locals looking to buy plants and flowers for their gardens.

One of the most popular items sold during this time were tomato plants, which proved to be a hit with many first-time gardeners. As people looked for ways to stay occupied and find solace in nature, growing their own vegetables became a popular activity. And with the help of the ironmongers, many were able to get started with their own tomato gardens.

Since then, buying tomato plants from the ironmongers has become somewhat of a minor tradition for many locals. It's a way to support a beloved local business and connect with others in the community who share a love for gardening.

Growing your own tomatoes is an excellent way to enjoy fresh, delicious produce while supporting your local community. When you buy local plants, you're supporting local growers and helping to reduce the environmental impact of long-distance transportation. Plus, growing your own tomatoes is a fun and rewarding activity that can involve the whole family.

Tomatoes are incredibly versatile and easy to grow. You don't need a large garden or even a garden to cultivate them. They can be grown in containers on a balcony or patio, or even indoors with the help of grow lights. And with thousands of tomato varieties to choose from, there's sure to be a type that suits your taste and growing conditions.

In addition to being tasty and easy to grow, tomatoes are also packed with health benefits. They're high in antioxidants and vitamin C, and studies have shown that they may help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

If you're new to gardening, growing tomatoes is a great place to start. They require minimal maintenance and are generally pest-resistant. And if you find that you have a surplus of tomatoes, there are many ways to preserve them, from canning and freezing to making sauces and salsas.

Local plants and flowers can also be purchased at the Swansea Botanical Gardens Plant Shop, which is open every Wednesday and Saturday between 10am to 2pm. You can find the Botanical Gardens at the top of the park near the Sketty Road entrance.

The garden shop is run entirely by volunteers from the Friends of the City of Swansea Botanical Complex. They are are all keen local gardeners and more than happy to share their vast amounts of knowledge with you.

By buying and growing local this summer, you can enjoy fresh, healthy produce while supporting your local community. So why not head down to W. Davies Ironmongers and pick up some tomato plants today?
