From the Sketty Councillors.
Following concerns about the amount of traffic using Eversley Road, Frogmore Avenue and surrounding roads, as Sketty Councillors, we organised an information session on 12 June for people to view a possible scheme to introduce a one-way system on Eversley Road, (from the Gower Road junction to Frogmore Avenue), and Frogmore Avenue itself.
We are grateful to all those who came along and to those who emailed and spoke to us separately with your comments and questions over the suggested scheme. We have now had the opportunity to review the feedback with the Council’s professional traffic and road safety engineers.
As we said previously, the suggested proposal should be viewed as the first stage of a larger scheme to address concerns of residents and businesses in the area, and we propose a few different elements at this point in time, with an opportunity to review how these operate before moving forward with other proposals. Therefore, the following will be progressed in the coming months, with other elements being considered at a later date.
ONE-WAY SCHEME
It is clear from the feedback that a majority favour a one-way scheme, but there are significant concerns over the impact this might have on traffic in neighbouring streets and the flow of traffic at the Frogmore Avenue/Coed Saeson Crescent junction. A temporary order to introduce a one-way flow, as proposed previously, will be introduced for a period of six months to see what the impact of a more permanent scheme would be.
This will entail temporary signage and physical barriers being installed, with current on-street parking arrangements continuing in place for the duration of the temporary arrangements.
During the trial period, the scheme will be monitored by officers with traffic counters and it is essential that you let us know your views on how the scheme is operating. Positive comments will be as important as raising on-going concerns with us, so we can make a judgement over whether a permanent scheme will address the problems that local residents and businesses have been experiencing with the increase in traffic over the years and the safety of all road users.
Proposals are being drawn up for the introduction of additional Resident Parking bays along the stretch of Eversley Road between its junctions with Sketty Avenue and Gower Road. This scheme is intended to proceed as a separate measure from the One-Way proposal mentioned earlier and will be subject to the usual advertising and consultation arrangements, when comments will be invited prior to the legal orders being implemented.
JUNCTIONS OF EVERSLEY ROAD, GOWER ROAD AND PARC WERN ROAD
As a result of difficulties experienced with parking on or very near these junctions, it is proposed to introduce Traffic Regulation Orders to introduce or extend double yellow lines which are intended to improve visibility at these junctions and improve road safety.
BRYNMILL LANE JUNCTION WITH GOWER ROAD
We did receive some suggestions about introducing a ‘no right turn’ order as vehicles come up Brynmill Lane onto the junction with Gower Road, as a result of difficulties drivers have of making that turn. Again, following comments, we have decided not to progress this proposal at this time, BUT to introduce a Traffic Regulation Order to install double yellow lines at both sides of the junction to improve sight lines of drivers exiting Brynmill Lane. We have also requested ‘Keep Clear’ markings on the junction to prevent stopped traffic blocking the junction.
PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT THE GOWER ROAD ENTRANCE TO SINGLETON PARK
Sketty Councillors are making enquiries for the current zebra crossing to be replaced with a traffic light-controlled crossing (pelican), which would have several benefits, including improved pedestrian safety, smoother traffic flows and possibly making it easier for vehicles exiting Brynmill Lane.
Clearly with the general increase in vehicles on the roads which were built many years ago when traffic volumes were negligible, it is impossible to ensure that all concerns can be addressed, but our over-riding aim is to provide schemes which deliver safety for all users, especially pedestrians. We will continue to listen to concerns of local residents and work to address them as best we can. But please let us know your views, especially on the trial of the one-way system for Eversley Road/Frogmore Avenue.
