Sketty Going Strong
Taken from the June 5, 1908 edition of The Cambrian. I wonder what these gentlemen would think of our progress since.
SKETTY GOING STRONG. MAGISTRATE THINKS IT IS HURRYING. BUT MR. LEYSON SAYS IT'S GALLOPING!
At Swansea County Petty Sessions on Saturday, Mr. R. T. Leyson submitted plans for the rebuilding of the Bush Inn, Sketty. Replying to the chairman, Mr. Leyson said that considerable bedroom accommodation was provided for.
Mr. Portsmouth, architect, said the present building was old and the bedrooms low. The house was in a bad state of repair, so that considerable improvements were really necessary. The plans provided for a bar and smoke-room, 11ft headroom, a kitchen with 9ft headroom. There were a bar, smoke-room, kitchen, refreshment, sitting, and six bedrooms; also a three-stall stable. It was proposed to make it quite a modern building. The refreshment-room had a special entrance, and was to be used as a tearoom.
Mr. R. Watkins objected to the proposed method of drainage, and also pointed out that in some cases magistrates had held back their decisions owing to the proposals of the new Licensing Bill. It was proposed that new licences should pay present monopoly value, and in addition to pay monopoly value for any increased accommodation. Mr. Leyson interposed that the magistrates had nothing to do with any legislation that might take place.
Mr. Watkins: Will Mr. Leyson allow me to go on? Mr. Leyson No; I'm objecting that you are irregular. The magistrates have no right to decide a question on what may happen next year.
Chairman said he took it their first consideration should be efficient hotel accommodation for the district.
Mr. Leyson Yes, certainly, sir; you have nothing to do with what Mr. Asquith or even Mr. Lloyd-George may do in January next. (Laughter.) Chairman: We must not forget that Sketty is hurrying on. Mr. Leyson: Hurrying on, sir; why, it's galloping! (Laughter.)
After a retirement the plans were parsed.
