A vacant office building on Gower Road in Sketty could soon be welcoming patients after Swansea Council approved plans to convert the premises into a dental surgery.
The two-storey property at 120 Gower Road, situated alongside the veterinary practice and close to the former Sketty Police Station, was granted planning permission for a change of use in August.
The original application, submitted to Swansea Council on 7 May 2026, proposed converting the building from office accommodation into a dental practice. Following a period of consultation, permission was granted on 4 August.
The plans will bring a new use to a building that has stood vacant, potentially adding another healthcare service to the village centre.
However, the developers have since returned to the council with a further application seeking changes to some of the conditions attached to the original permission.
Submitted on 14 September, the latest application requests alterations to the proposed arrangements for waste storage and bicycle parking, as well as changes to the permitted opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
The inclusion of weekend opening arrangements is particularly interesting, as it raises the possibility of patients being able to attend appointments outside the traditional Monday-to-Friday working week.
The original permission remains valid, although the council must consider whether to approve the proposed changes to its conditions.
The latest application, registered under reference 2026/1504/S73, is still awaiting a decision, with a target determination date of 10 November 2026.
There are also some unanswered questions about the new surgery, including who will operate it and whether it will provide NHS dental treatment, private appointments or a combination of both.
With access to NHS dentistry remaining an important issue for many people across Wales, the availability of NHS appointments would undoubtedly be of particular interest to local residents.
At present, no opening date has been publicly confirmed, and the planning records do not establish when the premises might begin accepting patients.
For Sketty residents, the prospect of another dental practice within the village could be welcome news, particularly for those who currently travel elsewhere in Swansea for treatment.
Further details about the proposed surgery, including its services, opening hours and arrangements for new patients, are expected to become clearer as the development progresses.
